Efficient and sustainable future: new raw material supply for the steelmaking plant

In April 2024, after the completion of the impressive raw material conveyor bridge and the six unloading bunkers for railcars and trucks, the new raw material supply was successfully put into operation for the steelmaking plant. With a total length of 1660 meters and 13 conveyor belts, the conveyor system ensures the supply of alloys and additives to the LD3 steelmaking plant and the electric steelmaking facilities. Impressive flow rates and a powerful dust collector are just some of the highlights of this new infrastructure.

TransMet, the greentec steel investment program, has enabled the Steel Division to initiate a groundbreaking development. The brand new commons and office building (Office Building 53) sets the standard for optimal working conditions and promotes a culture of cooperation.

Green electricity from a tiny tunnel

The electric arc furnace (EAF) requires a significant amount of electrical energy. This energy is provided to us by Austrian Power Grid on the outskirts of the works, roughly 1,600 meters from the steelmaking plant. The electricity is transmitted from there through a microtunnel to the EAF.

Process analysis The government submission documents and engineering specifications have been completed, and detailed planning is in full swing!

The detailed planning of the new fully automated process lab is in full swing and includes an extension of the building, equipment and the pneumatic dispatch system. Modifications in the steelmaking plant will also require relocation of the existing pneumatic dispatch system tubes and the installation of new ones.

voestalpine Stahlwelt is being renovated

Beginning on 1 July 2024, the exhibition area of voestalpine Stahlwelt will be closed for roughly one and a half years for comprehensive renovation. The event area will continue to operate with limited restrictions, and the popular production facility tours on the plant premises in Linz will continue as before during the renovation period.

At the center 95 percent of all samples—an international record—are fully automatically measured, processed, and presorted for the subsequent process steps.

voestalpine supplies first CO₂-reduced premium steel

greentec steel is voestalpine’s ambitious phased plan for the long-term decarbonization of steel production. As a first step, the Group is now offering a CO₂-reduced Edition of all the flat steel products manufactured by its Steel Division in Linz. As a result of an innovative raw materials mix and even more efficient processes, the direct emissions generated during the manufacture of voestalpine’s greentec steel Edition products have been reduced by around 10 percent. There is significant interest from customers. For example, voestalpine is supplying Norwegian company OSO Hotwater, which will use the greentec steel Edition of “colofer” premium steel strip in its heat pump boilers, storage tanks, and smart boilers.

Taking responsibility for society and the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture at voestalpine. The Steel Division in Linz was one of the first steel companies in the world to be officially certified as a sustainable production site by the non-profit organization ResponsibleSteel. Compliance with a total of 200 different criteria was a prerequisite for the award, including responsible raw material procurement, CO₂ emission reduction and meeting the company responsibilities of employee and human rights.
