Climate cooperation at voestalpine with German premium automobile manufacturer
The Austrian steel and technology Group supplies high-quality steel to Mercedes-Benz AG, using scrap metal from the company. Starting in 2027, they will also deliver CO2-reduced steel from the electric arc furnaces in Linz and Donawitz.
Mercedes-Benz AG and voestalpine are partnering as two global corporations, both dedicated to ambitious climate protection programs. As part of its greentec steel roadmap, voestalpine will gradually transition to green steel production using electric arc furnaces at its Linz and Donawitz locations by 2027. The German premium car manufacturer aims to achieve a carbon-neutral fleet of new vehicles by 2039 with its "Ambition 2039" initiative. Among other partners, voestalpine has been brought on board to support this goal. In the current decade, the Stuttgart-based company aims to process over 200,000 tons of CO2-reduced steel annually in its press shops. This is crucial because steel accounts for up to 20 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions in the production of an electric vehicle.
The first dividends of climate protection investments are already visible
Mercedes-Benz's "Ambition 2039" is seen as a signal for the transformation of the entire European steel industry. voestalpine anticipated this necessary transformation process years ago and is actively implementing a well-structured roadmap for green steel production through greentec steel, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in environmental and climate protection. The company has set a specific target to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2050.
