Efficient and sustainable future: new raw material supply for the steelmaking plant

State-of-the-art conveyor technology and impressive production capacity:  

The new conveyor line is equipped with 13 conveyor belts, is more than 1660 meters long and enables efficient supply of LD3 steelmaking and electric steelmaking with the required alloys and additives such as lime. Almost 1000 tons of lime and additives, which is equivalent to roughly 40 truckloads, and 354 tons of different alloys are transported each day. These impressive production volumes underline the performance of the new raw material supply.  

Powerful dust removal system 

Another highlight is the powerful dust removal system that ensures safe and environmentally friendly operation with an extraction rate of 250,000 m³/h. The facility is a major contributor to environmental standards and workplace safety.  

Challenges and successes in transition  

Replacing the raw material supply system during full-time operation of the steelmaking plant was a major challenge. Uninterrupted supply to the steelmaking plant is now guaranteed thanks to the cross-divisional cooperation between the personnel at BTM, BTL, BTA and the project team. This enabled a fast rampup curve for the new raw material supply system and ensured a smooth transition.  

Successful progress for a sustainable future  

Successful commissioning of the new raw material supply marks a significant step forward for the steelmaking plant. The state-of-the-art technology and high capacity of the plant ensure that it can be operated efficiently and environmentally compatibly. Uninterrupted supply to the steelmaking plant is now guaranteed thanks to the above-average commitment and the cross-divisional cooperation between the operating personnel, engineering personnel and project team. Excellent teamwork and a commitment of everyone involved have made this success possible and are the basis for the successful future of production in Linz.  

To greentec steel

The greentec steel project of voestalpine is an ambitious step-by-step plan that makes a valuable contribution to the achievement of the climate goals. As a first step, the voestalpine Group plans to replace two blast furnaces with two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) by the year 2027. The investment volume amounts to roughly 1.5 billion euros. 

CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 30% as early as 2027 by making this switch from the blast furnace to the EAF. This corresponds to a savings of nearly 4 million tons of CO2 per year, amounting to almost 5% of the carbon emissions in Austria. This makes greentec steel the largest climate protection program in Austria. 

The two electric-arc furnaces will enable voestalpine to produce roughly 2.5 million tons of carbon-reduced steel by the year 2027, roughly 1.6 million tons in Linz and 850,000 tons in Donawitz.
