A train for the environment
Carbon-neutral supply of voestalpine products to the automotive industry
When it comes to environmentally responsible solutions, voestalpine leads the way with the Bavarian Shuttle. Freight trains supply large car manufacturers and component suppliers in Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate with steel from Linz in Upper Austria and transport scrap back to production. This saves more than 8000 tons of CO2 every year. But this train has even more advantages.
Benefits of the circular economy
The Bavarian Shuttle runs every work day. A single train replaces 52 trucks. In total, more than half a million tons of freight are moved every year in this environmentally friendly way. Further advantages are speed, flexibility and reliable schedule of the shuttle. Production fluctuations can be absorbed on a daily basis and balanced out in the interest of industrial customers.
Green logistics partners
The project partners are DB Cargo and CargoServ, the rail freight transport company of voestalpine Stahl GmbH. voestalpine relies on the carbon-free transports of DB Cargo, a company that operates on green electricity. The CO2 emissions incurred by trucks for onward carriage, for example, are offset by the purchase of additional green electricity for the railway network. CargoServ as our logistics partner exclusively uses CO2-neutral electricity on the Austrian route. When compared to truck transports, this results in 8000 tons of CO2 savings each year, as was noted at the beginning of this article.
Carbon-reduced operations
Environmentally responsible logistics is a core concern of voestalpine. Roughly 80 percent of the raw material supply (11.5 million tons) and approximately 60 percent of the finished goods supply (5.5 million tons) from the Linz location are transported by rail partners. But green logistics is only one part of our sustainable measures. You will find more insights and surprising facts here: voestalpine.com/stella
