Creating Lasting Connections with voestalpine Böhler Welding for the new Indonesian Capitol building in Nusantara

10 July 2024 |

The New National Capital City (IKN) will help Indonesia achieve its target of becoming a developed country by 2045, as outlined in the Indonesia 2045 Vision.

We are proud to announce that voestalpine Bohler Welding Asia Pacific, supported by our production site in Cikarang, near the capital city of Jakarta, is participating in the project of the new Capitol building, which is being built on the island of Borneo in Nusantara, the future capital of Indonesia.

The structure of the Capitol building, the structure of the Garuda statue and the statue itself were welded with consumables produced at our manufacturing sites in Jakarta, Indonesia, Suzhou, China and Cittadella, Italy.

The Capitol building will be Nusantara's most iconic structure, dominating the new city and embraced by the Garuda Wings statue. Garuda is the national symbol of Indonesia, representing knowledge, power and bravery.

Challenge

The technical requirements for the new Capitol building are extensive, as is the lead time, which must be guaranteed, since the official inauguration is scheduled for August 17, 2024. The island of Borneo, with its humid climate,  presents an additional challenge due to the absorption of moisture. This requires special care and the selection of suitable welding consumables and storage requirements to ensure trouble-free welding.

The project schedule for the construction of the statue is a real challenge and seamless delivery must be maintained throughout all phases of the project.

Solution Competence

voestalpine Bohler Welding Asia Pacific has supported the project from the very beginning, both technically and commercially. Not only with our product expertise, but also with our process know-how in various welding applications. Our in-depth technical knowledge of submerged arc welding made it easy for us to compete and propose the right technical solutions for the welded beams of the structures in the Capitol building. The local production of our wire and flux combinations in Jakarta and Suzhou is advantageous as it is a relatively short distance from production to the Nusantara site.

diamondspark is a complete portfolio of seamless cored wires. They are characterised by a wide parameter window suitable for all welding processes, low diffusible hydrogen and excellent mechanical properties. For the structure of the Garuda statue, diamondspark Ni1 RC was chosen for its excellent weldability in all positions, excellent bead appearance, very low spatter loss, fast freezing and easy slag removal. The Böhler FOX 2.5 Ni basic electrode was also used for welding the structure.

SAW Wire and Flux combinations and stick electrodes used, for welded beams for the structure of the building:

  • Böhler UNION S Ni1 + UVC 418TT
  • Böhler UNION EM12K + UVC 401
  • Böhler FOX S EV 50

Fluxed Cored wires and Solid Wires used for welding the structure and frame of the Garuda statue:

  • diamondspark Ni1 RC
  • Böhler FOX 2,5 Ni (8018)

The Garuda statue itself was welded using our stainless-steel electrodes:

  • Avesta 308L-16
  • Avesta 309L-16

Previous projects such as Japek, where Diamantfunken Ni1 + UVC 418TT had been used and where the customer had already had good experiences with our products, were a solid reference for us.

The entire voestalpine Bohler Welding APAC team is very proud to be involved in the construction of the new Indonesian Capitol building and the Garuda statue, the national symbol, by providing dedicated technical support and products of the highest quality.
