After the initial weldability tests, more samples of the selected products were ordered, as well as alternative diameters for further weldability tests. After further tests at RWE, the products UTP 86FN (2.5 mm and 3.2 mm) and UTP A8051Ti x 1.2 mm and UTP A8051Ti x 2.4 mm x 1000 mm were selected. RWE conducted further weldability tests and modifications to the welding procedure protocol to find the fastest welding technique that gave the lowest HAZ hardness with low defects and good mechanical properties.
The welding procedures were qualified with low heat input, acceptable melting values, good mechanical properties and in a range of welding positions. The qualified welding procedures were then used during shutdowns at the Pembroke power station.
RWE now has a proven solution to safely and quickly repair the damage caused by water drop erosion in the steam turbine casing. Water drop erosion is a permanent problem, so the solution will continue to be used where this type of erosion occurs.
