voestalpine Foundry Group and LDW – Together Towards Excellence

As the Foundry Group, we pooled our expertise and implemented the ambitious project: the production of a sophisticated cast steel pole wheel, which is used as a central component in Sweden's largest three-phase motor. We managed to complete the project with a delivery time shortened by approximately 30% - proof of our flexibility and efficiency. This joint project underlines our ability to meet even the most complex requirements on time and with the highest quality.

Challenge Accepted - Quality Delivered

Our initial contact with LDW in early 2024 quickly resulted in a demanding order: the production of a pole wheel, later to be installed in a three-phase synchronous motor for a chemical plant in Sweden. The project’s requirements were clear yet challenging. The pole wheel was to be made from steel casting, which replaced the more commonly used nodular cast iron due to its properties and the customer’s specifications.

This posed unique manufacturing challenges, as steel casting typically requires longer lead times. The pole wheel boasted impressive dimensions of approximately Ø 3 x 2 meters and a raw weight of around 31,500 kg. The project demanded utmost precision and efficiency—requirements we successfully met with our expertise and adaptability.

Speed Through fastlane®

Despite these challenges, we achieved an exceptionally short delivery time thanks to our proven fastlane® service. Instead of the usual lead time of 8.5 months, we delivered the pole wheel in just 5.75 months—even with a two-week operational pause in August. This success was made possible only through close collaboration with LDW and our shared commitment to excellence.

The Pole Wheel – Core of a High-Performance Drive System

The finished pole wheel will be installed in a three-phase synchronous motor used in a polyethylene plant to produce plastic pellets. These pellets serve as the raw material for manufacturing insulation for medium- and high-voltage cables. With its 30 wound synchronous rotor poles and 180 rotating pole bolts, the pole wheel is a true powerhouse.

The pole wheel will be assembled as the central component of the motor in Sweden. Delivered in disassembled main components by sea, the motor is designed for maximum operational safety, longevity, and reliability—values deeply ingrained in our production process.

Conclusion: A Partnership Setting New Standards

The collaboration with LDW impressively demonstrates what is possible when two companies pursue common goals with passion and expertise. At the voestalpine Foundry Group, we are proud to contribute to LDW’s success and, in turn, to the realization of one of Europe’s largest drive systems.

This project marks the beginning of a promising partnership that we are proud of—and further proof that we consistently find solutions that excel, even for the most demanding projects.
