LOGISTICS ON TRACK
When it comes to transport networks, voestalpine is right on track.
A good example of how the company is setting new standards in the industry is that an impressive 60% of its outbound transports are on the railway, underlining the company commitment to environmentally compatible transports.
CLIMATE-FRIENDLY LOGISTICS
To put this in perspective, a single freight train can replace up to 52 truckloads on the roadway. This means fewer traffic jams, less noise and, most of all, lower CO2 emissions.
Not every railway is the same. After all, the type of electricity utilized is crucial to the emissions attributed to this means of transport. But here, too, voestalpine is one step ahead.
67.5% of the traction power at Rail Cargo Austria, one of our rail logistics partners, came from green electricity in 2024. The share at CargoServ, the railway company owned by voestalpine, was even 90%.
The share of renewable energy utilized for transports handled in collaboration with DB Cargo, a German logistics service provider, amounted to 34%. Nearly 100% of the energy used for rail transports in Austria comes from sustainable sources, none of which are nuclear.
These figures clearly show the enormous potential of rail transports in our efforts to slow climate change.

A CLOSED SYSTEM WITH TWICE THE BENEFITS
Railway transports alone are not enough. It gets even better in a closed system. The same trains that deliver products to customers bring back scrap for reuse at our production site. This clever solution avoids empty railway runs and maximizes the efficiency of each round trip.
Initiatives focused on a gradual conversion to 100% green electricity on the railway will further improve the CO2 balance.
Keep on thinking greener!
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION STRATEGIES
With its high share of railway transports and innovative logistics solutions, voestalpine is positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable steel logistics.
By consistently using the railway and implementing closed systems, voestalpine is shaping an environmentally friendly future for the steel industry.

Each train that leaves the production site makes the steelmaking industry a bit more environmentally compatible.
