Shift2Rail

Shift2Rail is a public-private partnership established under European Union law with a total budget of over 900 million Euro. Its mission is the development of breakthrough rail systems, products and services ready for market. Top technology, system competence and an outstanding digitization level are self-evident prerequisites. Thus, Shift2Rail is essential part of the comprehensive mission to translate the transport policy goals of the Union into action and ensure the best price-quality ratio in public procurement.

The Shift2Rail-Infrastructure-Innovation-Program targets on both cost efficiency and reliable high-capacity by

improving the operational performance of the track
establishing integrated measuring and monitoring systems
developing intelligent asset management strategies

As technology leader voestalpine is an active contributors, member of the Virtual Vehicle Austria Consortium+ and represented (through VVAC+) in the Shift2Rail Governing Board.

EU project “Shift2Rail” - Making railway transport more competitive

In October 2020, voestalpine supplied the ÖBB with two demonstrator turnouts for the EU project “Shift2Rail”. The new high-performance turnouts will reduce downtime and lower costs over the entire life cycle.

In close collaboration with partners ÖBB-Infrastruktur and Getzner Werkstoffe, voestalpine Railway Systems developed a system turnout with innovative features in the areas of frogs, switch rails, mounting system, drive unit, and sleepers. The system is constantly monitored using proven technology and a new innovative sensor and measuring concept. Read more about this project here.
