Milestone in digitization - Long Range Wide Area Network

LoRaWAN at the Krems site

Long Range Wide Area Network - this network enables sensors and other components to communicate across the entire factory site.

Facts & Figures

  • Launched in March 2019 as a pilot technology evaluation
  • Summer 2020 & 2021 tested as proof of concept
  • Creation of framework conditions for a Group-wide contract
  • In operational use since 2022
  • more than 300 sensors installed

Used as Data as a Service (DaaS), this technology is used for wireless and energy-saving signal transmission. voestalpine Krems is a pioneer here and initially started with an evaluation for leova smart.

Following the proof of concept, we have been focusing on a broad range of applications since 2022 - with many advantages for the individual departments. For example, the plant infrastructure benefits from battery status monitoring for escape lights, basement flooding sensors and various contact switches for monitoring gates, doors and hall windows.
The quality assurance engineering team can monitor the temperature and humidity in the storage area. Safety specialists can, for example, measure air quality and monitor first aid kits so that they can be filled as required.

Benefits

  • Wireless, energy-saving signal transmission
  • Wide range of applications
  • Maximum flexibility - without additional power supply or network connection
  • Optional reports and alerts by email
