380 apprentices start their training at voestalpine in Austria

voestalpine depends on exceptional training for young professionals as a key success factor for leadership in future global markets. The Group currently offers 1,500 apprentices around the world exciting opportunities in the technology and industrial sector, 1,040 of them in Austria. With the start of the new training year, about 380 young people throughout Austria are beginning their apprenticeship at voestalpine today—about 175 in Upper Austria, about 160 in Styria, and about 45 in Lower Austria. This makes voestalpine one of the largest apprentice trainers in the country.

The young professionals can look forward to future-oriented instruction and a wide range of career opportunities in an international steel and technology group. More than EUR 90,000 is invested in training each apprentice.

Especially in times of a shortage of skilled workers, it is great to see that so many committed young people are once again starting an apprenticeship at one of our state-of-the-art training centers this year.

State-of-the-art technologies for training

Around 30 professions are available for apprenticeship at voestalpine’s 16 training locations in Austria. Currently about 460 apprentices are being trained in Upper Austria, about 430 in Styria, and about 150 in Lower Austria. The Group offers comprehensive instruction using the latest technologies, including virtual reality glasses, robotics, and tablets in digital modules. The high quality of the training is reflected in the success rate at the final apprenticeship examinations (which was almost 100% in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in the last 2023/24 business year) as well as in regular top rankings in apprenticeship competitions. In addition to the extensive transfer of specialist knowledge, the next generation of specialists also receive a range of opportunities for personal and social development, such as language immersion programs, excursions, and the annual Group Apprentice Day.

Increasing number of female apprentices also in technical professions

Female apprentices are now working in many of the 50 apprenticeship professions at voestalpine Group, and the trend is on the rise. Currently, the general proportion of women among young professionals is 26%, while 22% of technical apprentices are female. Over the past ten years, voestalpine has successfully more than doubled the percentage of girls in technical apprenticeships in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Measures such as participation in careers fairs and visits to schools as well as Girls Day are intended to increase the proportion of women even further.
