Faster and safer through Vienna: voestalpine supplies rails and turnouts for the modernization of the Vienna public transport network

voestalpine Railway Systems, the world's leading supplier of complete railroad infrastructure systems, supplies premium rails, high-speed turnouts and signaling technology to major international projects. voestalpine, which has already equipped numerous world cities with high-tech railroad infrastructure, is currently playing a key role in the modernization of the Vienna streetcar and subway network as the main supplier to Wiener Linien. This year and next year alone, around 20 kilometers of heavy-duty rails will be produced at the voestalpine site in Donawitz for the renewal and an additional 16 kilometers for the construction of three new streetcar lines, with the turnouts coming from Zeltweg.

As the largest regional transport network in Austria, Vienna's public transport network comprises around 83 kilometers of subway lines and 880 kilometers of bus lines. With an operational length of 171 kilometers, the streetcar network is the sixth largest in the world.

Railroad operators not only rely on voestalpine track systems in Austria: the Group, which has already equipped Berlin, Klang Valley (Malaysia), Brussels, Zurich, and Graz with high-tech railroad infrastructure, is currently also implementing metro projects in Singapore, among others. In the business year 2023/24 voestalpine Railway Systems generated revenue of EUR 2.1 billion and employed 7,700 people worldwide, including 1,800 in Austria.

Metal Engineering Division

The voestalpine Group's Metal Engineering Division is the global market leader for railroad infrastructure systems and signaling technology with its Railway Systems business unit. With its Industrial Systems segment, the division is also the European market leader for quality wire and a global provider of complete welding solutions. Seamless tubes are also supplied all over the world from the Kindberg site in Austria. Customers come from the railroad infrastructure, energy, mechanical engineering, automotive and construction industries as well as the renewable energy sector. As part of greentec steel, the Metal Engineering Division is already working and researching intensively on various innovative, climate-friendly technologies and production processes. In the 2023/24 financial year, the division generated revenue of around EUR 4.3 billion with its Railway Systems and Industrial Systems business units, 46% of which was generated outside Europe. The division thus generated an operating result (EBITDA) of EUR 606 million and employed around 14,700 people worldwide.
