Products for welding technology

High strength, corrosion resistance, cold resistance—the demands placed on steels and other metallic materials are constantly increasing. This brings with it the growing challenge of reliably and durably joining such materials, especially when it comes to welding. The voestalpine Böhler Welding Group is a leading supplier in the field of welding.

With our employees’ many years of expertise and our extensive product range, we are a full-service provider for welding and brazing applications for a wide variety of materials and chemical surface treatments for stainless steel. Whether inert or active gas, stick electrodes, TIG rods, solid or cored wires, submerged arc combinations, manual or highly automated: our wide product range covers all components of welding and brazing technology:

Consumables

Every welding job has its own unique aspects. Different base materials, varying applications, and diverse climatic conditions must be taken into account when welding on site. The choice of filler material or welding process also depends on these various factors.

Welding consumables

Welding consumables

voestalpine Böhler Welding covers the complete range of solid and cored wires, TIG rods and wire-powder combinations for submerged arc welding as well as strip cladding for many different welding processes. We even offer products for 3D printing, known as wire arc additive manufacturing.
When it comes to the surface protection or repair of components, voestalpine Böhler Welding offers customer-oriented solutions for specific requirements under the UTP brand.
voestalpine know-how can already be found in the wire rods for welding consumables. These voestalpine Wire Technology products are used, for example, in gas-shielded and submerged arc welding. Batches tailored to special application variants can also be produced on request.

Brazing consumables

In the field of brazing technology, voestalpine Böhler Welding has an extensive product range of brazing rods, brazing preforms, brazing foils, fluxes, brazing wires, and pastes, which are used in a wide variety of applications such as automotive engineering and engine production.

Finishing chemicals

Finishing Chemicals

We are a leading manufacturer of pickling products for stainless steels and special alloys. Our products contribute to the protection or formation of this passive layer so that our customers can offer outstanding stainless steel surfaces. Pickling stainless steel is a high-quality technical process for optimal corrosion protection.

  • Stick Elecrodes

    Approximately 25% to 30% of products welded worldwide are manufactured using arc welding with stick electrodes. Steel and pipeline construction cannot do without manual welding with stick electrodes.

    Our stick electrodes help to keep one of the oldest processes for joining metals up to date and compatible with the specific requirements. We offer the most comprehensive portfolio available on the welding market, with special offers for unalloyed, low-alloy or stainless steel, pipelines, and much more. This includes a complete range that meets the requirements of welding processes at particularly low temperatures. In the area of wear protection, we offer suitable products for many applications.

  • Welding wires

    Active gases are used for MAG welding in the form of carbon dioxide or a gas mixture. MAG welding in a gas mixture is the dominant practice as it has a lower tendency to spatter and a higher deposition rate than welding with 100% carbon dioxide. Inert gases such as argon, helium, and their mixtures are used in MIG welding. These shielding gases do not react with either the base materials or the welding consumables.

    However, there are also applications with self-shielded flux-cored wires, in which case the wire itself provides protection against the influence of the atmosphere, making the use of inert gas unnecessary.

    In arc spraying, a process for metallic coating, compressed air or inert gas is used to atomize the molten material and distribute it on the surface.

    voestalpine Böhler Welding offers a wide range of coordinated solid wires and cored wires for manual and automated welding processes as well as for arc spraying, covering all major grades.

    The extensive voestalpine Böhler Welding product range includes:

    • solid wires for all alloy groups of unalloyed, pipeline steels, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, copper alloys, and WAAM;
    • gas-shielded flux-cored wires for every alloy group of unalloyed, low-alloy, stainless, and pipeline steels for joint welding;
    • gas-shielded flux-cored wires, e.g. for wear protection applications;
    • self-protecting cored wires with specific solutions for low-alloy and pipeline steels.
    • The portfolio also includes cored wires for arc spraying, e.g. for surface protection.

    We offer cored wires in seamless and folded production technologies. Our seamless design of the “diamondspark” wires enables a low diffusible hydrogen content as well as no moisture absorption during storage and processing, resulting in a low risk of hydrogen-induced cracking and pore formation.

  • Cladding

    Submerged arc welding strip cladding and, in particular, electroslag strip cladding (ESSC) are welding processes that offer the highest deposition rate with minimal dilution and no change to the chemical analysis. Both SOUDOTAPE strips and RECORD® welding flux are benchmarks for the cladding of demanding materials

    • to achieve surface properties such as the corrosion resistance of pressure vessels in the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, and in power plant construction as well as
    • the wear resistance of rollers in mineral processing, mining, and the steel industry.
  • TIG rods

    The TIG welding process is a high-quality welding process that utilizes inert gas. It is used for demanding applications in fields such as:

    • pipeline construction;
    • food industry;
    • pressure vessels;
    • aviation;
    • and many more.

    For TIG joint welding and repair welding, we manufacture a comprehensive range of TIG rods for many steel grades and non-ferrous alloys.

    For optimal welding results, important parameters of the tungsten electrode must be taken into account and coordinated. The success of TIG welding can therefore be significantly improved by using coordinated welding machines with intelligent functions, such as the Böhler Welding EasyArc.

  • voestalpine Böhler Welding offers a wide range of welding consumables. These include materials for submerged arc welding, which makes use of a wire electrode and welding flux. Our range includes over 120 wire-powder combinations for steels, stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys.

    These products are used worldwide in demanding industrial segments, such as:

    • energy generation;
    • processing and chemical industry;
    • upstream and downstream offshore production;
    • pipe mills;
    • nuclear industry;
    • wind tower manufacturing; and
    • construction industry.
  • Modern welding technology also shows its strength in additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing with metals.

    voestalpine Böhler Welding has developed high-quality welding wires for this special application, helping to set the stage for wire arc additive manufacturing. Our wires with a high deposition rate of up to 5 kg per hour significantly simplify and speed up production processes. In addition to materials based on commercially available welding wires made of unalloyed, medium-alloy, and high-alloy steels, the product range also includes nickel- and cobalt-based alloys.

    The most important advantages of manufacturing with wire arc technology are:

    • wide range of deposition rates;
    • low material loss;
    • short production time; and
    • reduced processing time.
  • We offer a wide range of metal powders for various spraying and welding processes. UTP specializes in the development of suitable protective coatings based on the load profile for modern coating processes.

Welding machines

Welding machines provide the necessary power to generate and maintain the arc during welding. The heat produced is essential for creating the necessary conditions to successfully carry out the many different welding operations. As a full-range supplier, voestalpine Böhler Welding produces a wide selection of welding power sources, tailored to the respective applications and situations.

Thanks to inverter technology, welding machines have left the days of “heavy technology” behind them. The key component in our welding power sources is our own patented MultiLine Three Level® inverter. This modern and technically advanced inverter offers unbeatable performance and reliability over the long term.

With over 100 models of arc welding inverters for steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals, we cover all major welding processes (MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA) and plasma cutting.

Our TERRA NX and URANOS NX power sources and our SABER plasma cutting systems offer the perfect conditions for welding and cutting. While special machines are particularly suitable for certain areas of application, such as stainless steel, other device designs can be used flexibly not only for different base materials but also for various welding processes.
