I started my apprenticeship for information technology engineering at group-IT in September 2016 and have now been working in the CSA (Base Applications) department since February 2020. Before that I was at a HTL, but I wanted to go more into practice and therefore decided to do the apprenticeship as an IT technician.
My first tasks during the apprenticeship were at the service desk as customer support and telephone dispatcher. There I gained my first experience of how to deal with customers and got to know the Group structure. After an internal restructuring, I became part of the "Backoffice Clients" team, in which I not only dealt with a large number of IT customer problems, but was also able to contribute knowledge to the department independently. At the end of my apprenticeship, I switched to SAP Basis and, after gaining some experience in daily business, I am now mainly deployed in projects. Ultimately, my very varied day-to-day work in "SAP Basis" includes SAP system upgrades, S/4 conversions, migrations (on-premise to AWS/Azure) and the maintenance/operation of a large number of SAP systems that are used worldwide in the voestalpine Group.
The best thing about my job is that I can work independently and contribute to projects. I can focus on my relevant topic, master challenges and share experiences with others. A highlight for me is every time a project is successfully completed and the customer is satisfied. Especially with complex topics or when you have worked on a problem for a long time and finally found a solution. This also fits very well with my definition of success, because what counts for me is that the customer is satisfied at the end of the day and that his expectations have been met or even exceeded.
I chose group-IT because the working atmosphere was very pleasant right from the start, the areas of responsibility were varied and there were opportunities for further training, including SAP training. I really appreciate the fact that we always help and support each other in the team. New ideas are accepted and supported, even by more experienced colleagues. I also think the other benefits, such as the company apartments, the flexitime model and the opportunity to work from home, are super.
I can only recommend to all career starters to get involved right from the start and not to shy away from new challenges. It is worthwhile to approach the tasks with motivation in order to develop yourself further. I've already learned a lot of SAP Basis topics at group-IT, and I've learned more and more thanks to the broad spectrum. Even today, I'm still learning new things all the time.
