Romana is a one-woman show in a section of the Steel Division’s testing technology. She is the one who sends the sample material to the customers and prepares, processes and checks everything. She is the “dispatcher” of the “Testing Technology and Analytics” department – competent, creative, consistent and communicative.
Since April 2022, it has been part of the newly built test center in Linz. She got off to a flying start there: Romana completed her training (2019) in metalworking on a short course. She dedicated half a year to this completely. After that, she found it even easier to work in the rehearsal workshop. Comparing is good. She did that too, but after a short time she returned to our testing technology. At the same time, she got a taste of “shipping air”. The timing was right: a position was available, she expressed her interest and within two weeks she took over the management and execution of the test center’s shipping department.
As a young mother, her main focus was on the needs of her children, but now she is increasingly looking after herself and her own development. She is currently training to become a materials tester. She received the YES! to this further training from her team leader just two days after making the request. No question about it! Because the good qualifications of the entire team ensure our quality.
Romana’s enthusiasm for what she does is simply infectious. In the morning, she meets with her team in the test center every day, then she drives to the shipping department and deals with all the customers in the “Testing Technology and Analytics” department worldwide. She takes care of everything from packing and paperwork to preparing the goods for collection. And if she needs more than two hands for certain hot- or cold-rolled samples, she simply turns to her colleagues in the warehouse next door and gets on with it.
Her first time in dispatch was challenging, and the computer applications in particular caused her difficulties at first. But with the help of her “buddy” – in her case her inviting friend – most of the problems disappeared. Nevertheless, working on the PC is new territory for her. This is where she benefits from another skill: her willingness to learn.
“I’m not afraid of knowledge. Education keeps you fit,” she says. Her children have taught her that. She certainly has the confidence to learn new things and try things out. With patience, a structured and tidy approach, she manages her one-woman show perfectly.
What is the working culture like at voestalpine? Romana’s answer comes promptly: future-oriented. For her, it is important that with greentec steel we are leading the way in decarbonizing the steel industry for future generations. Ecology and economic technology will be even better coordinated. The discipline and perseverance with which we as the #voestalpineteam are sticking to this fits in well with their values. It is clear to Romana that we offer jobs that people want for their own sons and daughters. One of her sons is also employed by us.
