It is a perfect fit for Anna: she is a materials engineer at the new testing center in Linz and examines whether the prepared cold strip samples withstand the demanding tests. Today, she trades her focused job to appear in front of the camera for #OurFavoriteThings.
Anna asked around in her private life, made a lot of enquiries, checked again and confirmed for herself: People had nothing but good things to say about voestalpine as an employer—even when it comes to women in technical professions. So she started an apprenticeship as a materials engineer with us in 2018 and has been part of our testing team ever since.
Anna uses automated testing systems to check the mechanical characteristics of the prepared cold-rolled strip samples in tensile and bending tests and forwards the results to Quality Management. She explains the steps of this kind of test:
The valuable scrap is of course recycled. It is always exciting for them to find out the exact maximum load of the tested sample.
Currently, Anna is mainly doing bending and tensile tests. She is still getting to know the other testing facilities so that she can be even more flexible. She enjoys the constant new challenges and changing conditions. For her, team spirit and helping each other is also important, just like the question: How are you doing? Whether personal or professional—you can talk about anything during coffee breaks and in between. In an understanding environment like this, colleagues find it easier to ask for help or are better able to accept help when they need it.
Anna is currently making the organizational switch from shift work to the day shift. For her, this currently fits in better with her life with her friends, who all work the usual office hours and with whom she naturally wants to spend time. She is looking forward to this. Otherwise she also enjoys spending a lot of time with her dog in the great outdoors, especially in the forest.
Anna encourages other women to pursue a career in a technical field. “It’s a very relaxed and varied environment,” she says. Anyone interested should take advantage of the information on offer, such as open house days, and form their own opinion.
